Cong, Westport, and Derry

On the Tour

Days 10 and 11 were fairly heavy on the driving, but we still enjoyed a variety of experiences. As a fan of fantasy novels and movies, I loved spending time at the beautiful and imposing Ashford Castle. While there, we all had the opportunity to work with one of the falcons on site.

Several of us enjoyed another night of traditional music at Matt Molloy's in Westport. Unofficial evening excursions like those were fun ways to slow down and see a slice of daily life in the areas we visited.

In Derry, we learned of the north's experiences with revolution through bus and walking tours. Seeing the murals still on the buildings reinforced how recent the Troubles were.

Tip for Shy Introverts

Fake It Until You Make It!

That is advice my Dad loves to give. In my life and career, I have pushed myself to do things that are difficult for many shy introverts, including the most difficult one: public speaking. In those instances, I've often acted as if it's not "me" doing it but another version of me capable of the task. On this trip, especially at the beginning, I used a similar approach. I tricked myself, and maybe even some other tour members, by acting like I wasn't shy, until it got easier to not be so.

Remember, as scary as it is to spend an entire vacation with strangers, you're a stranger to them at first too. They don't know you're a shy introvert. Try being someone new for a little bit, at the same time you're trying other new things!
